The Morning You Were Called Home: Through Fog Into Light

The Morning You Were Called Home: Through Fog Into Light

August 30, 2025•4 min read

Today was the day you were called home.

With so little time, so little warning, I’m left holding a lifetime of memories and lessons—some I understood immediately, others unfolding slowly over the years. We had plans—big ones—and somehow, I wasn’t with you. Time stood still that day. Frozen from the moment I got the call.

At first, I brushed it off. Dismissed it. But then a quiet voice inside—what I now know as my intuition, my guides—urged me to listen to the scanner. It was procrastination, I suppose, that kept me from being in the car with you that morning. And so, you were alone when you were called home.

What followed were moments of stillness and silence that stretched into hours, days, weeks, months... and now years.

You made so much of the short years you had. You touched so many lives and accomplished so much. My life was truly blessed to have you in it. You taught me countless lessons—some I understood only later. I know you see that now. I feel you drop in from time to time, to reassure me, to keep me on my path.

I first knew it was really you when I was overcome by the urgency to be there—to go find out for myself. Still in my pajamas, I slipped on shoes and stepped outside, dazed. The magnet shaped like a stop sign still clung to the door. I had reminded you that it was garbage day. But the fog was thick that morning, and you wanted to get an earlier start.

Just one small pause—one little task—might you still be here?

The next thing I remember, I was in the car, driving toward the scene—just three miles from our home.

I reached a blockade. No traffic allowed. I told them who you were—my husband, my everything. I described your car. Miraculously, they waved me through the line that had been stopped.

Then I saw it.

A stretcher being loaded into an ambulance—but the shoes I saw weren’t yours. We had just bought you new New Balance shoes. These weren’t them. You weren’t in that ambulance.

Then I saw our car—the one you had just bought for me—off in a side yard, not even on the roadway. A soft blue blanket lay where I assumed you were. The fog still hung in the distance, lifting slightly.

From that mist, a woman appeared. Dressed all in white—a nurse, I think—just like my mother used to dress. White uniform, white pants, white shoes, and a cardigan. She reached for my arm, gently stopping me from moving toward the blanket.

I collapsed there, on the side of the road. She sat with me. And in that moment, I knew. Even before the officers brought me the registration from the car, I knew it was you. I knew you were gone.

You were my protector, my hero, my everything. And now I was alone.

No one to share a dish of ice cream at night. No more budgeting, juggling, coordinating. No one to remind me which receipts to save. It’s still raw. You’re really gone.

There were decisions to be made—papers to find, to sign. Calls to make. So many steps to take, and not one of them guided by your steady presence. I did what we had prepared for. I did what we discussed. But it wasn’t the same. It never has been.

So many people showed up, caring and supportive. But I had never felt more alone. Was this how life would be now? The house felt empty. Even the dogs seemed lost.

Nothing has felt the same since. Not without you. Not without your guidance beside me.

Still, I love to share our memories. We had so many adventures. We had the world by the tail before you were called home.

The years have passed, and while the ache remains, so does the gratitude. I cherish every memory. I carry your lessons. I celebrate you.

And I celebrate the gift it was to be part of your life—even if it was too brief.
